For Dart Charge purposes, "van" splits into two classes based on gross vehicle weight. Most Transit-style vans pay the car rate. Anything over 3.5 tonnes is Class C and pays more.

Class B (car rate)

Vans under 3.5 tonnes

Most light commercial vans. Charged at the same Class B rate as a car.

How to know which class your van is

Class is determined by gross vehicle weight (GVW), also called revenue weight. Two reliable places to find it:

  • V5C log book. Look for "Revenue weight" or "Maximum mass". Under 3,500kg = Class B. Over = Class C.
  • Manufacturer's VIN plate. Usually on the door pillar or under the bonnet. Lists GVW in kilograms.
  • DVLA online. Free vehicle enquiry at gov.uk/get-vehicle-information-from-dvla.
